4 days in Croatia: sun, sea & style in Split, Hvar & Brac

Croatia had been on my list for a while, and it more than delivered: historic charm, turquoise water, delicious food and island hopping — all without needing a car. Whether you love culture, beach time, or just soaking up the sun, here’s exactly how I spent 4 unforgettable days based in Split, with day trips to Hvar and Brac.

Day 1 – Arrival in Split & First Discoveries

After landing in sunny Split, we dropped our bags and went straight into explorer mode. Split’s old town is built around the ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, a 4th-century Roman palace that feels like a real-life film set. It's full of small alleys, charming cafés, and hidden courtyards — perfect for wandering around and discovering local gems.

Highlights:
• Strolling the Riva promenade with an iced coffee in hand
• Admiring the architecture of the National Theatre
• Enjoying a traditional dinner at one of our fave Split restaurants called Fife
• Finishing with a scoop (or two) of the best ice cream in town: Ela's Gelateria Artigianale

Day 2 – Hvar Island: fortresses, lavender & coastal views

Hvar is pure Mediterranean magic; think palm-lined streets, bougainvillea-draped walls, and glittering sea views. After arriving by ferry, we explored the town before heading up to the Spanish Fortress (Fortica) for a view we’ll never forget.

Heads-up: the hike to the top is quite steep and can get exhausting in the heat, so I really recommend going early in the day or late afternoon. The fortress has an entrance fee, but the views are 100% worth it.

Other highlights:
• Wandering the quaint streets and harbor
• Buying local lavender cream from a lovely street vendor – I’m OBSESSED. It smells divine and works wonders on dry skin, bug bites, and even sunburns.
• Grabbing a drink before catching the ferry back to Split

Back in town, we danced the night away at a bar with great music and cocktails, Fabrique — loved the laid-back party vibes!

Day 3 – Brac island: Bol & Zlatni Rat

Another ferry day — this time to Bol on Brac Island, home to the famous Zlatni Rat beach. The beach’s pointed shape shifts with the tide and wind, and its clear water and pine tree surroundings make it a dreamy place to spend the day. We had lunch at the port of Bol at a gorgeous little local restaurant called Konoba “Nautica” Bol

We also took a small taxi boat to the nearby Mlini Beach, which was a peaceful little cove with fewer crowds and a relaxed vibe. Perfect for a quiet swim and sunbathe. Tip: On Mlini and similar small beach spots, bring cash! Many boats and vendors don’t accept cards.

After returning to Split in the late afternoon, we wrapped up our beach day with a lovely dinner at another local favorite, Bokeria Kitchen & Wine, and one last sunset stroll along the Riva.

Day 4 – Lazy morning in Split & Departure

We took it easy on our last day; browsing little shops, soaking up the last rays of sun, and grabbing one final gelato before heading to the airport. Even after a short trip, Split had started to feel like home.
